If you are thinking about carrying a firearm for self-defense in Illinois, the first step is understanding what the state requires. Here are the basics, based on current guidance from the Illinois State Police (ISP).
The basic requirements
- Age: applicants must be at least 21 years old.
- FOID card: you must have a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card, or be in the process of obtaining one, to hold a Concealed Carry License (CCL).
- Training: a 16-hour concealed carry course taught by an ISP-approved instructor.
- Fee: the ISP lists the application fee at $150 for Illinois residents.
The 16-hour course
The required training covers far more than shooting. Students learn firearm safety and handling, the legal framework for carrying and using force, and how to keep a firearm secure and controlled in everyday life. How long your license lasts, and renewing
A newly issued Illinois CCL is valid for five years. You may renew up to 180 days before it expires, and a 3-hour refresher training certificate is generally acceptable for renewal. Our 3 Hour Renewal course is built for exactly this. Keep in mind that you must have a valid FOID to keep a valid CCL.
Carry is a responsibility
A license is the beginning, not the end. Knowing where you may and may not carry, how to store your firearm safely, and when force is legally justified is what makes a responsible carrier. Ongoing practice and training are the best way to stay confident and compliant.
